Wherever possible, the standard spelling forms of modern Turkish have been followed for Turkish names and expressions. However those Ottoman place names outside the boundaries of the Turkish Republic which have a generally accepted English form, e.g. 'Aleppo', are referred to by it rather than the Turkish form.
