The ash that settled in the water made the soap bubble up a lot. Her strong hands and wrists were covered in calluses, as were the hands of all girls who had spent their childhood working in the factory. Her fingers were crooked and the joints stood out. She pressed the laundry into the water rubbed it against the soap, then kneaded it and squeezed it, gripping it firmly between her two strong hands. Singing her song, she did her laundry with relish. Joyful bubbles drifted up around her. Her song grew louder at times, became softer at other times, and occasionally stopped completely before starting back up again. It was an old Bosnian folk song. The song had the full range of colours of an ornate kilim. It had longing, it had desire, and it had love... All the motifs one would find from India to China, from Casablanca to New York, from the Po Valley to the South American steps, and indeed in Anatolia. It was a complex tapestry of mankind's longing and desires.
