This book dwells on a painful subject, the fate of the Armenians of Anatoli, the Turkey of-day. It is a contentious subject, and has generated substantial literature. Although the events in guestion occurred almost a century ago, various public bodies in the western world adopt, or at least give debating-time to, resolutions upon the subject, inviting to-day's Turkey to express culpability. There are even legal arrangements in France, by which it is a crime to guestion the Armenians'offical version, and the doyen of Ottoman scholars, Professor Bernard Lewis of Princeton, found himself on the losing end of a legal case, because he had suggested that no document is extant that shows any desire, on the part of the Istanbul goverment, to commit a genocide of the Armenias. Other academics have faced similar, or worse, problems if they stated what, for them, seemed to be the facts.
